On death and capital punishment [Feb. 3rd, 2007|02:16 am]
I have been thinking about death as of late. Not really morbid thoughts, but more along the line of capital punishment. Should it exist? Should a nation be able to wield the power to end lives? Let me shed some light on the subject:

If each man is a king, and his house is his castle, then my castle has been under attack by unwelcome enemy spies and sabotuers. Slowly I have been feeding them information as bait, and Saruday night the trap will be set with deadly precision. I know there are more than one of them, and I will kill them all using their own greed. Even though I lay death on the floor of my castle and bait it with sweet smelling publix brand peanut butter, my enemy will have done it to themselves.

All I have to do is pick up the dead mouse in the morning.

Dear Colorado,

Quit hording all the winter weather. All that snow you guys have there yall will never use, so save the rest of the country some grief and share the cool. Today I sweated. It was 85 degrees. I wore flip flops and a tee shirt, even after dark. And in case you guys in your western nonsense havent looked at the calendar, its January.

Living in Florida I really am not requesting snow, but temperatures that require me to use the winter clothes that I got for my trip to New York and St. Louis and never used would be nice. Also note that this is the first time I have ever complained about the heat. Ever. Even when I crawled inside an oven.

You can blame our parents for using too much aerosol all you want, but I know that yall are really the hamsters of weather. The hole in the ozone layer is over Antartica, but the hole in human generosity is centered over Denver. Plus Im sick and tired of hearing the snowbirds whine about the heat. Stay here year round, then say something pansies!

If we dont have temperatures below 70 in the next three days Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Maine are going to file a class action lawsuit.

Lovingly, from the great states of the South.

Internet Down [Oct. 15th, 2006|07:33 pm]
The internet is down at my house. So is the cable. Yeh, Brighthouse sucks so far... and its probably not going to be up before the technician gets here Tuesday. If anyone is trying to get on the RPGS site then just hang on until I can get everything back working. Right now Im borrowing Steve's internet at his house.

School schedule [Aug. 24th, 2006|10:48 pm]
Yup, I have officially registered for 16 credit hours of classes. The problem is, thats not enough. I will be graduating in May, and in order to do that, need to fulfill some graduation requirements ... like taking some courses other than music. So, here is the schedule.

4 credit hours - Intro to Liberal Arts - yes, a freshman course. Its dumb.
4 credit hours - Quantitative Reasoning - statistics with a more confusing name. Like statistics needs to be more confusing...
4 credit hours - 19th Century British Novels - Im kinda excited about this course.
2 credit hours - String Methods - Yes I play cello, but I wanna learn the other ones too!
2 credit hours - Conducting Practicum - A chance to study conducting with one of the best conductors in the state? Yes please...
2 credit hours - Applied Cello Lessons - it is my major... and there is something about a recital
2 credit hours - Orchestra - I get to hang wiht Beethoven, Borodin, Brahms and the like.

That totals 20 credit hours .... aka alot. But Im also auditing some courses too!
2 credit hours - Composition Practicum - soon to debute my Serenade for Strings
1 credit hour - String Ensemble - cause I would get lynched if I didnt play.

Grand total: 23 hours. If you multiply that by the estimated three hours of work per one hour in class that gives a total of 69 hours of school. Plus 20 hours of work, travel time, eating time, sleep (8 hrs a night), and weekly extra-curricular activites that leaves me with -6 hours to myself. Wee.

No one is ever allowed to complain about how hard something is to install, unless they have spent any significant time working in Linux. No one.

Im on hour six of an install process for the web server, and still have a ways to go. All this just to run php. Wee.

Because of the layout of my house, and the inability of my bird to turn corners while attempting to fly with clipped wings, the bird keeps on landing in the toilet. Im quick enough to snatch him out before he drowns, but after landing in the same water that poo lands in, and then getting thrown into the bathtub to dry is probably not good for Slimer's ego.

In other news... everyone visit http://www.greasyspork.com now.

A website? Oh, my! [Jul. 18th, 2006|09:23 pm]
Well, my virtual friends I have moved. My roomie Steve got himself hitched so he kicked us out of his place. The wedding was awesome. Joel is the next Micheal Jackson. Anyways, we have moved about 3/4 of a mile south and now have four guys in a 900sqft 2-1 house. Its tight.

*pauses while groans die down*

Thanks to the generosity of my brother, I have a decently powerful second computer that I have installed linux on. It is now functioning as a web server. I am in the process of learning linux terminal, html, css, scp, ssh and all that other fun stuff that goes along with operating an open source computer. While I learn stuff I will be updating my website.

Everyone is welcome to visit it: www.greasyspork.com There are some plans for it in the future, and I would appreciate any suggestions that my friends would have as far as content, resources to put up, etc. Feel free to drop me a line and let me know.

Oh, and btw... took me four hours to make that web page, cause Im doing it right and not just throwing one together in Word. Dont believe me? Check out my code!

If you are not a computer geek, or make every attempt you can to avoid computer geekdom, then skip this post.

I recently upgraded my computer. Its fun. I also downloaded a few beta trials, the formost being Windows Vista 64bit. So far its running pretty stable, and aside from a dual monitor configuration problem everything seems to work. I havent had a chance yet to test out my fancy smancy new vid card (geforce 7600gt), or to put the 64bit processes through the paces.

Im also in the process of setting up a linux box, which shall be host to my website, an ftp, and whatever else various stuff I feel like putting up there. All in all its been a technogeeky week for me.

Half-life 2 and Age of Empires 3 here I come.

Rant on shipping [Jun. 26th, 2006|09:14 am]
Welp figured Ive been saving my weekly rant alotment up so its time to use it or loose it.

Ddont ever ship UPS. They are unreliable, and their customer service is nonexistant. I ordered a package on Thursday night, it was processed and shipped on Friday. It was sent 2nd day air. I have a tracking number. According to their tracking information, it left Memphis TN on a plane on time. On Friday. Nothing has changed since then. Granted, there is Saturday and Sunday between them, but Id expect the system to figure out that the package isnt still on a plane somewhere over the smokies by now.

So, since its taking a long time and I cant work on my computer until it gets here, I decided to call them. Their service hub does not have a listed phone number, I had to get it from one of hte smaller stores (the people at which were very helpful and friendly). The lady that I talked to was rude and unwilling to help in any way. She told me that the package was set to arrive on Tuesday, like the website tells me. So, for a second day air service that gets the package in hand on Friday, delivers it on the third business day. Hrmm.... Oh yeh, I also cant come and get the package, even if they try to deliver it and I wasnt there. Also unrelated is my roommate Steve's beef with UPS, who left a package on the front porch with no signature, which was promptly stolen as a result of UPS negligence. There is now a sign on our door that informs delivery people to leave no packages on the porch, idiots. UPS will catch hell if I dont get it on Tuesday.

Compare now to FedEx. I have recieved packages EARLY from FedEx. Their service doesnt cost that much more, and has the biggest and best package processing equipment (a claim not made by me, but by FedEx, whom my brother works for). If I am not here to sign for a package, then FedEx leaves a door tag with directions to the service center, pickup instructions, phone number, and an estimated time that it will be available for pickup, or you can just wait til the next day for home delivery. The tracking information for FedEx is updated more frequently, and gives more information.

If anyone wants to ship anything, do yourself and whoever if getting the package a favor and ship FedEx, even if it costs twice as much as UPS. Its worth it.

Freakyness abounds! [Jun. 10th, 2006|01:15 am]
Soo, Ive had some interesting experiences in my time ... but this one takes the cake.

We had an impromptu bachelor's party for my friend Mark who is getting hitched tomorrow. Afterwards I was heading home down Wymore, and was stopped at the light at Kennedy (Eatonville), when this white guy comes running full tilt at my truck. Having living in a bad part of town, I threw the truck in gear, and when it was obvious he intended to head straight for the open drivers window I ran the red light. He grabbed the bed at the tailgate and held on. So, Im now in 2nd gear with a man hanging onto the back of my truck.

First reaction was to swerve semimaniacally to try to get him off, but he was holding on too well to be thrown off. After 3rd and 4th, he showed no signs of attemping to get further up in the bed, so I held out my cell phone with 911 in it ready to send and started to slow down. About 30-35mph he let go and rolled to a stop on the pavement. I stopped to see if he was moving, but he got up again and ran at the truck again. I took off and left him. Prolly carried him 300 - 500 yards.

After getting home and conferring with roommates and calling Kelly, I called the cops. They told me that they had someone in custody that matched my description (I told them that the guy would almost definately have some scrapes on him... no one letting go of a moving vehicle at that speed could get away from those....). The police told me that they guy was a fugitive from Lakeside Hospital, aka mental patient. Since there was no damage to me or to my truck I told them that I wasnt going to press any charges, and they told me that they really didnt need anything else from me. Didnt even ask for my name or address, so I assume that they meant it.

Anyways, Im home and not really as tired as I was when I left Mark's place. Now I figure is a good time to update LJ. Woot.

Hallway shopping? [May. 10th, 2006|02:18 am]
Welp, everyone knows that college students moving out of the dorms throw away some perfectly good stuff, but this is a little bit crazy. I scored a guitar case for my roommate, and a working microwave with a built in toaster that is in need of a little cleaning. But the next one takes the cake.

In a pile of trash was a Playstation 2. The disc tray was stuck in the open position. Kelly said that it prolly was worth it, after all who would throw away a working $200 piece of gaming equipment, but I took it home anyways. After 15 minutes I had the thing disassembled and had just popped the cd tray back into place. After 30 minutes I had the thing hooked up to the tv playing the Matrix DVD. Now all I need is a couple controllers and a hard drive for it. Wee!

About cookies [Apr. 3rd, 2006|09:08 pm]
Everyone loves chocolate cookies... but why? What secret ingredient is there that makes them absolutely delicious? Please post a short explaination of what feature of the chocolate chip cookie attracts you the most. Examples may include: the big chocolatey chunks, the sweet and tasty meat of the cookie, or the way that a chocolate chip cookie just begs for a tall glass of cold milk to wash it down.

Interesting chocolate chip cookie history: The chocolate chip cookie was born in 1937 when baker Ruth Graves Wakefield of Massachusets added chunks of chocolate to cookie dough assuming that it would melt and spread throughout the cookie. It did not, and the oops resulted in the most popular cookie in America with an estimated seven billion consumed in the United States alone.

The wheezing noise my chest makes when I speak, the weakness that covers my entire body, the consistant three day fever, yes Adam has the flu.

I havent been into work since last week, and went to a doctor this morning. My diagnosis was a 'bviiirulent invfection' given by a doctor thats about as american as I am New Yorker. Im now armed with an medical excuse to miss work, and hoping that the wrath my boss can no longer throw on me is worth the $85 it cost for the visit. Mental note: get a better job, and get health insurance. Step one: get a better job.

I prolly wont be working at Powerhouse for too much longer. That means that the three (four) other people there that I hired now no longer have job secruity. Two of them are quiting anyways, leaving work waay understaffed (by about half) and lacking in cooks (by all)... and I really dont feel bad about it at all.

Boxes in the mail! [Feb. 17th, 2006|12:10 am]
Welp, in the mail today I recieved the fuel pump for the little car im trying to sell. So, if you know anyone that wants to buy a $800 Ford Aspire... lemme know.

The other box I got today was my new laptop! Its nice! Ive spent the latter part of the evening uninstalling, installing, downloading and configuring all the programs on it so its tailored to my precise specifications. Its like moving into a new house. The wide screen is definately wide, and also of good quality. Watching DVDs is fun. The battery lasts like 3.75 hours. My digital camera card works. My flash drive works. The wireless card works. I really wont know what to do with myself... as it seems like only yesterday that in order to connect to the internet from a laptop, I not only had to plug it into the wall for power but also had to plug in the ethernet cable to the router. NO MORE! I can go truly wireless! with no wires! as in ... just the laptop... and ... lap!

Yes Im excited. Goal is to not break it.

Laptop here we come! [Feb. 11th, 2006|10:32 am]
My laptop that my mom gave me has been on the fritz. Well, it was messing up enough to encourage me to invest in a new one. So, after some weeks of deliberation and shopping I ordered a refurbish laptop from Dell. While I dont think that they are the best, I was swayed because of price. And a 2 year warrantee (that I had to pay for...)

Welp here are the specs:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_6000?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh#tabtop

Mine will come with a dvd burner, pentium m 740 processor, 60GB hard drive and half a gig of ram. Should be here sometime next week. Yay.

Among the other famous events of the year 1810, Napolean got divorced and then remarried, King George III was declared insane, the Mexicans began fighting for independance from Spain and Robert Schumann was born.

On other notes, Steve Wimmer has hte most interesting birthday on July 2, and I share a birthday with Neil Gaiman, although Im sure I already knew that.

Stupid people ... [Jan. 21st, 2006|02:53 pm]
Today at work we were really busy. Each check was taking a while, and this woman was hopping up and down asking everyone where her food was. She said 'I left my two kids in the car, and I need my food right now!'

I was apalled. The other customers were apalled. My coworkers were apalled. Stupid people like this should no reproduce.
